Scott Carpenter

Scott Carpenter

carpenterScott Carpenter began his career in the Public Defender’s Office in 1990 and has served as Chief Deputy since 2006. Mr. Carpenter has extensive legal expertise having represented clients in matters ranging from homicides to misdemeanors. In 1999, Mr. Carpenter first served as manager of the office assisting Mr. Stephens in the development of the holistic practices that are now ingrained in the office’s day-to-day representation of clients. In 2000, Mr. Carpenter received the Robert W. Ritchie Award from the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyersfor outstanding service to TACDL. Scott debated for the University of Tennessee from 1981 to 1985, he officially received his B.S. in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University and his J.D. from the University of Tennessee. He has served as Chairperson for the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Technology ad hoc Committee from 1996 – 2004. He is a provisional member of the American Academy of Forensic Services, Jurisprudence Section since 1997. Mr. Carpenter is an active, contributing member of the greater Knoxville community serving as a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor since 2008. He and his wife, Peg Hambright, received the Knox Heritage 2010 Fabulous Fifteen Award for redevelopment of a historic structure for reuse as a multi-use commercial building – tenants include MagPies Bakery, Glowing Body Yoga Studio and Holly’s Corner restaurant.
