Visions of the End
In spring 2020, the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture featured a special exhibition of rare artworks demonstrating how the Book of Revelation and other prophetic visions transformed medieval and Renaissance society. The UT Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies co-sponsored the exhibition. Former and current Marco Directors Jay Rubenstein and Gregor Kalas curated the show.
The exhibition featured enamels, metalwork, woodcuts, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, stone relief sculptures, and more from some of the nation’s top collections of art:
- The Glencairn Museum
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- The Morgan Library and Museum
- The National Gallery of Art in Washington
- The Philadelphia Free Library
- The Walters Art Museum
A number of special programs accompanied the exhibition, including UT class tours, school group visits, and public lectures. Family Medieval Day, which combined the Marco Institute’s annual middle- and high-school outreach program with the museum’s Family Day, attracted more than 200 visitors to the museum for an afternoon of medieval-themed crafts, exhibition tours, and other activities.
