Amelia Adams is one of the first seventeen graduates of the new TEACH/Here program that helps new college grads and mid-career changers like Adams earn a master’s degree and teaching certification in STEM disciplines.

Theresa Lee Named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Nationally recognized psychology researcher Theresa M. Lee has been named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, following a nationwide search. Lee is currently chair of the University of Michigan Department of Psychology, a research-active department ranked among the top psychology departments in the nation with nearly seventy full-time faculty.

Smart and Adaptable, Soft Materials Find Their Place

Alexei Sokolov is intrigued by soft materials. “Soft materials, by definition, can change—that’s why we call them soft materials,” he explains. Change means the molecules in the materials move, and if he can figure out how they move, he will have important clues to controlling and manipulating their movement. That knowledge is the key to designing new materials with unique properties.

Thomas DeMarcus and the ‘Holy Grail’

Successful college alumnus and native Tennessean, Thomas DeMarcus, got his start on stage in UT’s Clarence Brown Theatre. He returns to Knoxville this month to the Tennessee Theatre stage where he will star as four characters in the musical comedy and Tony Award-winning show ‘Monty Python’s Spamalot.’

Professor Michael Guidry has experienced that himself, and now he is sharing his insights on programming for the Android platform in an undergraduate course.

Now in its 61st year, the Wildflower Pilgrimage has welcomed nearly 1,000 nature lovers to a celebration of spring and wildflowers in the Great Smoky Mountains; but for those who are unable to stop and smell the flowers, the UT Herbarium website features a searchable database that plant enthusiasts and students can explore and admire year round.

New Faculty Enrich Academic Programs

From pirates to forensic anthropology to francophone literature, new faculty’s broad-ranging interests and expertise bring a wealth of enrichment to the college’s academic programs. The college welcomed 22 new faculty this year to the departments of anthropology, English, geography, history, microbiology, mathematics, modern foreign languages and literatures, and the schools of art and music.
