Theresa Lee Named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Nationally recognized psychology researcher Theresa M. Lee has been named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, following a nationwide search. Lee is currently chair of the University of Michigan Department of Psychology, a research-active department ranked among the top psychology departments in the nation with nearly seventy full-time faculty.

Christopher Magra, assistant professor of history specializes in pirates and the seas they frequented.

New Faculty Enrich Academic Programs

From pirates to forensic anthropology to francophone literature, new faculty’s broad-ranging interests and expertise bring a wealth of enrichment to the college’s academic programs. The college welcomed 22 new faculty this year to the departments of anthropology, English, geography, history, microbiology, mathematics, modern foreign languages and literatures, and the schools of art and music.

McSween to Repeat as Interim Dean

Distinguished Professor of Science and Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Hap McSween has worn many hats for UT Knoxville, one of which was interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences five years ago. Beginning next January 1, McSween steps up again to serve the college in this vital post.

Middle School Teacher Wins Award in Name of UT Alumna Marian Oates

Marian E. Oates’ legacy of environmental conservation continues to influence East Tennessee through her endowed Teacher Enrichment Award. The 2010 award winner, April Meyers, is researching composting techniques with a UT faculty mentor this summer. She will translate her learning into lessons for her students when she returns to the classroom in August.
